Design review/Manufacturing inspection

Most stages and processes in the manufacture of pressure vessels, tanks and cisterns, pipe constructions, etc. are subject to design reviews and manufacturing inspections. In some instances, these steps can be carried out and documented using self-inspection procedures, but in the majority of cases there is a mandatory requirement for design reviews and manufacturing inspections to be performed by an independent third party. The same also applies to repairs, rebuilds and conversions.

DEKRA Industrial AB is accredited by SWEDAC, the Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment to perform design reviews and manufacturing inspections in accordance with:

The Swedish Work Environment Authority’s statutes (AFS)

  • Lifting devices, AFS 2003:6, AFS 2006:6 and AFS 2006:7
  • Machinery AFS 2008:3 *
  • Manufacture of certain vessels, piping and installations, AFS 2005:2
  • Pressure vessels and equipment, AFS 1999:4 (Pressure Equipment Directive) *

The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s statutes (BFS)

  • Lifts, BFS 2006:10
  • The Lifts Directive, 95/16/EC *
  • Steel Structure Inspections, Design Regulations (BKR) and Eurocodes

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency’s statutes (MSBFS)

  • Natural gas, MSBFS 2009:7
  • Transport of dangerous goods by rail, MSBFS 2009:3 and RID-S
  • Transport of dangerous goods by road and across country, MSBFS 2009:2 and ADR-S
  • Transportable pressure equipment directive, SRVFS 2005:3 (TPED)
  • Open storage tanks and pipelines for flammable liquids, SÄIFS 1997:9

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s statutes (NFS)

  • Storage tanks and pipelines for flammable liquids, NFS 2003:24

* Notified body

DEKRA Industrial AB is also a notified body for

  • The Lifts Directive (95/16/EC)
  • The Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC)
  • The Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC (PED)

This means that our work is accepted throughout the whole of the European Union without the need for any supplementary inspections.

DEKRA Industrial (former ÅF-Kontroll AB) is part of the DEKRA Group, which has a number of notified bodies in Europe to facilitate the performance of assignments that relate to equipment in more than one country. We also cooperate with other notified bodies that have local offices around the world that have PED expertise.

PED Pressure vessels

PED stands for Pressure Equipment Directive. PED's official designation is 97/23/EC. PED is one of the directives that the EU has decided to apply for certain products.  In Sweden, the Swedish Work Environment Authority AFS 1999:4 regulation applies to pressure equipment such as pressure vessels, piping, pressure accessories, safety equipment and aggregates.

Software

We use a large number of computational programs:

  • AUTOPIPE
  • CAEPIPE
  • MATHCAD
  • SOLID WORKS
  • STAAD
  • VVD

Standards

We also work to certain international standards:

  • AD 2000
  • ASME
  • PD 5500

Where do the inspections take place?

Design reviews are conducted in our offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

Manufacturing inspections are conducted by our inspection engineers on site where the manufacturing takes place and, in certain instances, in the installation. If manufacture takes place abroad we frequently delegate responsibility for inspection to the notified body that is closest geographically.
