  • Materials technology

It's the small details that make the difference

In order to assess the condition of a component, the remaining life of a structure or the quality of a welding job, a range of materials must be examined in detail. For this, we use advanced methods, well-equipped laboratories and experts with eagle eyes.

Materials technology

DEKRA has nine European laboratories with extensive experience in the field of materials technology. Metallurgy is the part of materials technology that concerns how you produce metals and alloys and their physical and chemical properties. When only the physical properties are being referred to, the term metallography is used.

Due to factors such as heat, high mechanical stress, corrosion or wear, the properties of a material may change over the lifetime of a structure. These changes often take place in the material's micro-structure and can, if they are not discovered in time, lead to the components failing or serious breakdowns. The study of changes of this type represent our laboratory's core business.

Our methods and techniques include:

  • Replica testing for condition assessment of the surface structure of components
  • Metallographic sampling and analysis
  • Optical microscopy of the micro-structure of polished and etched surfaces
  • Macro-structure – sampling and analysis
  • Analysis of weld seams and welded components
  • Investigation of surface treatments and coatings
  • Failure analysis of components and examination of surface cracks
  • Mechanical and technical tests
  • Corrosion – tests and analysis
  • Simulation of heat treatments.

Advice on material issues

The second part of our business is about advice on technical material issues. Our professionals work closely with our customers to identify the optimal solution to a given problem. This may range from corrosion to how the materials and components behave at high temperatures. Materials advice is intimately tied to the activity in our laboratories.

Our services comprise:

  • Support and advice on material selection
  • A summary of inspection methods for material to be examined
  • Assessment of remaining lifespan based on the analysis of the micro-structure
  • Instructions for heat treatment of materials and in connection with welding
  • Customised training in materials technology
  • Welding advice on matters relating to methods, parameters and controlled atmospheres

Assessment of the quality and reasonableness in the reports and conclusions.
